Let there be light, and let it shine

From the moment that we moved into this house I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this area.  I knew that I wanted a haning pendant, and I knew exactly what pendant lamp should go there.  My closet is right under this "walkway" or "foyer" or "entryway," not sure what the correct title is for this space, but it needed, something.

So, I showed my ever-so patient hubby my idea, my inspiration.

He will tell you he didn't care. Men aren't supposed to care about pendants and how pretty they look.

But he IS  a man, and he does care. And, that is another reason why I love him.

But, I digress.

We bought the Capriz Light Pendant from West Elm back in October.

We never took it out of the box.  I was hosting Thanksgiving dinner, and Christmas dinner, and there just wasn't enough time in our week to worry about my silly light project.  Besides, the Hacker and I are both new to DIY projects, especially electric ones.  We had to find time to include my ever so handy and helpful dad.

Finally, and I mean, FINALLY, it now being April, we have been able to crank out this project on a Saturday.

So we thought, at least.  There was no support for that pretty light of mine.  And it deinately needed some support, my pretty little light wasn't so little, and was purty heavy.

I was told, "I don't think we can do it.  Sorry, honey, I just don't see a way!" a

I wasn't going to give up on my capriz dream that easy.  So I sent my two main men out to the local Lowe's until they found a way.  And by George, they did.

It's called a celing brace and it's genius!

Once a hole is cut out of the ceiling, the brace can be inserted, turned horizontally and then expands and attaches itself to the beams on either side.

So father and son-in-law practice on a peice of carboard until they have the perfect size of hole for the base of the pendant.

Once they have adjusted the drill to the perfect size, my handy hubby does it for keeps.  No turning back now.

As a supporting wife it is my job to cheer my man on in these stressful situations:"Be careful!" "Don't make the hole too big!"

Of course it was perfect.

He inserted the brace,

expanded to the right size, and we were set.

Light attached, and time to undress all those cooped up capriz shells and let them dangle and hang like they were meant to.

My dad and his electric buddy, and of course the Hacker, rewired our bedroom to allow the switch by the door to turn on the light.  (Instead of an outlet underneath my vanity.)  A very practical move on their part.

It was a little too grand for me at first.  But, the more I look at it, the more I love our light.  I can see into my closet, without turing on the light in the bathroom.

I can turn on a light to see where I'm going before I enter our room.

And, finally, it draws your eye upward allowing our room to look a wee bit more spacious.

Again, here's the before:

And after:

Kristin
